India is a land of great diversity in its physical features, people, language and culture. We have 28 state and 07 union territories and education being state subject, each one of them follows its own pattern and medium of instruction. It really becomes difficult for the children migrating from one state to the other to continue their studies.
It is in this context that the idea of encouraging the growth of secondary schools with a common syllabus and medium of instruction for the benefit of the children of central govt. employees liable to frequent transfers was mooted by the second central pay commission. Accordingly, in 1962; the govt. of India approved the scheme of Kendriya Vidyalayas to cater to the educational needs of the children of central govt. employees including defence personnel and floating population liable to frequent transfers through out the country from one language area to the other.
The ‘Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan’, an autonomous body under ministry of HRD, Deptt of Education, Govt. of India on 15th December 1965, runs the Kendriya Vidyalayas. At present the total strength of Kendriya Vidyalayas in the country has risen to ____while three Vidyalayas are functioning abroad at Kathmandu (Nepal), Moscow (Russia) and Tehran (Iran).
